The successful one (a simple API for developers) took two weeks to validate and eight weeks to build. I talked to 50 potential customers before writing a line of code. The failures? I fell in love with solutions looking for problems. Classic mistake.

Six months ago, I started using AI to research and validate SaaS ideas before building anything. Not just for writing product descriptions or generating feature lists (though it helps with that too), but for the heavy lifting of market research, competitor analysis, and even conducting customer interviews.

What I've Learned About AI Limitations

AI is incredible for research and analysis, but it has blind spots:

It can't read between the lines in interviews. Tone, hesitation, and body language matter. Someone saying "interesting idea" with enthusiasm is different from saying it politely. I still do all interviews personally.

It misses emotional nuance. AI is great at identifying pain points, but terrible at understanding how much those pain points actually hurt. A mild inconvenience gets the same weight as a business-critical problem.

All three have B2B buyers with clear budgets and urgency. All three solve painful, frequent problems that people are already trying to solve with inferior tools.

The Ideas That Died

And here's why the other 5 didn't make it:

1. Social Media Scheduling for Developers: Solved problem. Too many competitors. 2. Startup Metric Dashboard: Flooded market. No clear differentiation. 3. No-Code Database Builder: Airtable exists. Hard to compete. 4. AI Writing Assistant for Legal Docs: High liability. Requires legal expertise. 5. Team Communication Analytics: Privacy concerns. Hard to get adoption.

Each failure taught me something valuable about market research, customer psychology, or product positioning. That's the point of validation: fail fast and cheap.

What You Should Actually Do

If you're sitting on a SaaS idea, here's my advice:

Start with customer problems, not solutions. Don't ask people if they'd use your tool. Ask them how they currently solve the problem and what they hate about their current solution.

Use AI for speed, not replacement. AI won't validate your idea for you, but it can help you research faster and spot patterns you might miss. The human judgment still matters.

Talk to 20+ potential customers before building anything. I know this seems like a lot, but it's the difference between guessing and knowing. The patterns become obvious after 15-20 conversations.

Focus on people who are already spending money to solve the problem. Free users don't validate anything. Paying customers validate everything.

Kill ideas quickly. I've saved hundreds of hours by killing bad ideas in week 1 instead of month 6. The goal isn't to validate every idea - it's to find the ones worth building.

The AI tools make this process faster and cheaper than ever. Six months ago, proper market validation required hiring expensive consultants or spending months on research. Now I can validate an idea in 3-4 weeks for less than $100.
